If a person has been out of work due to an injury but has recuperated, will it hurt your chances for a new job

I have been out of work for about 5yrs. and hopefully I will be having a procedure done that may give me back my life! If and when I go back into the work force I am afraid that telling a prospective employer that I had been injured on a previous job will somehow hurt my chances of getting a job. And I feel that I would 'have' to tell them in explaining the time gap since my last job. How would I handle that?
